Hello. Medium is designed for a 32-34 waist, Large for 36-38. These measurements are based on your natural waist size, which may be different from your pants size, for example.
If you're truly in between sizes then it becomes a bit of a judgment call. Many riders in this situation go with the larger size so that you're not wearing something too restrictive, but you also don't want them to fit too loose where the pad will shift around and you'll have excess fabric. Everyone's body type and preference on fit is different and we also make returns and exchanges very easy, if we need to go that route too.
