Hello.  We always include a product-specific size chart in each listing that should be true to form.  And we generally have a more "American fit" to our clothing, compared to many of our competitors who exclusively manufacture overseas.  So you don't need to "size up" to get a more realistic fit or anything like that.  
This jacket is designed to be worn over layers and that is taken into account with the sizing so at a 42" chest I would suggest starting with X-Large.  We all carry our weight differently but the X-Large should still give you a few extra inches underneath for layering and comfortable freedom of movement while wearing the jacket.
