Hello. You do sacrifice some dexterity with mittens, yes. These are very warm and greatly increase visibility, but you will lose some individual finger motion because all four fingers are grouped together.
I have personally found that after riding in them for a bit I was able to compensate for the new feel of the mittens as it relates to shifting and braking. It only took a little getting used to and now I don't think about it much (and I wear these every day in the cold months here in Pittsburgh, PA).
